Weekly Review: The Week Certainty Beat Avoidance

Last week I caught myself avoiding the work that mattered by staying busy with easier things. The headline casualty was my portfolio project: never started. This week, the very same project moved — I finished about half of RAGX v1. What changed wasn’t willpower. It was the environment around the work.

Three things made it almost automatic: a regular sleep routine, going to a café every day, and committing to a single project. The sequence became fixed — wake up, go to the café, open RAGX. There was no menu of “interesting” options to choose from, no decision to agonize over, and so nothing to avoid. The certainty did the work that motivation kept failing to do.

That reframes last week’s lesson. The gym habit stuck because it was low-friction and instantly rewarding; my job-hunt tasks lacked exactly that. A fixed routine plus one project gives the deep work the same low friction — you remove the decision, and removing the decision removes the avoidance. Momentum then compounds day to day instead of resetting each morning.

Not everything held. The JD list slipped again, this time because RAGX pulled me in completely — I’m telling myself the artifact comes first, and I’ll be watching next week whether that’s real strategy or a comfortable delay. Next week is built on what worked: finish RAGX v1, take a second build-from-scratch project to 30%, and finally start the JDs — all on the same wake-café-build rails that carried this week.
